Citizen Soldiers
The New South Wales Volunteer Rifles 1854 - 85
Until October 2009
Sydney's Hyde Park Barracks Museum is unearthing an important but little known aspect of Australia's military history with the new exhibition Citizen soldiers, looking at the New South Wales Volunteer Rifles - the 19th century volunteer force that shaped the reservists of today.
Curated by the Historic Houses Trust's Jane Kelso, Citizen soldiers features evocative relics of volunteer life including rare photographs, resplendent uniforms and regalia, rifles and bayonets, and memorabilia associated with their famed rifle matches.
